Calgary is in its heyday, being the Top Canadian Investment City, the Best Large City in Canada and the 5th Most Liveable City in the World! If you want to join the many thousands who have already moved here — our population is now at more than a million, and counting! — you might want to take a good look at Somerset real estate. Established only in 1995, Somerset is one of the newest neighborhoods in Southwest Calgary, which is considered the most developed quadrant of the city. So you’ll be in for a great deal – a prime location in the best part of Calgary, yet more affordable housing in a beautiful and fun community with still lots of room for growth and open spaces for development, and only a few minutes away from established communities like Shawnessy on the northwest and Midnapore in the northeast, and a quick ride by C-train and Macleod Trail to downtown Calgary.
A lovely and fun place to call home
One of the two gateways to Somerset is a six-acre public square exquisitely designed like an English country garden. It will take you to beautiful parks, pathways, and picnic spots that reveal the relaxed lifestyle of the residents, with a hint of adventure as what you’ll find at the Somerset Water Park, with its fun water sprays, and the baseball diamonds and tennis courts. You can also always enjoy a good read or some quiet time in the nearby public library, and you’ll find several schools in the area. Just six minutes southwest of the community is Spruce Meadows, a 360-acre equestrian facility and show jumping complex that is rated in TripAdvisor as the top destination among the more than 200 in Calgary. It’s heaven for its 500,000 horse enthusiast and show jumping fans annually, but is also a great place for a stroll and sightseeing, exhibits and shopping. The Spruce Meadows International Christmas Market is likewise much awaited, with its more than 250 vendors featuring a wide assortment of popular as well as unique and creative gift items. About eight minutes northeast of Somerset is the community of Midnapore, which has a mall with top fastfood restaurants, a man-made lake for water sports in summer and skating and tobogganing in winter, the popular Fish Creek Provincial Park with its impressive wildlife, the South Fish Creek Recreation Complex with its ice arena, a large business area, and several schools and service establishments. About seven minutes northwest of Somerset is the suburb of Shawnessy, with the Shawnessy Town Centre regional shopping area, the historic Shawnessy Barn on 17 acres of green space with a well-designed playground for children and tennis courts for adults, and several schools.
A young and decent community
About seven out of 10 people in Somerset are 44 years old or younger, with families making up 87% of the population. Immigrants make up one-third. Statistics Canada’s 2006 Census of Canada showed a median household income of $76,765, higher than Calgary’s, with only 6.9% low-income households, almost half that in Calgary. Seven out of every 10 homes are single detached and two are apartments, with some townhouses and low-rise condos; and nine out of every 10 homes are owned. Most of the homes were built in the 1990’s and are well-maintained. The average home price is above $300,000.
